New to home build

I'm an experienced sailor (cruising and racing).  We sold our 28 ft motorsailer last year and at the moment we're boatless.  I've done regular maintenance on wooden boats but have never contemplated a self-build project.

I'm thinking of having a go at building the 17ft Norwegian Pram from boatplans.dk (http://www.boatplans.dk/boat_plans.asp?id=12).

Does anyone have any experience of building from this company's plans?

Thanks,

Tom.

Welcome to the forum

I have no experience with plans from that company.

The pram looks very close to original scandinavian prams. Where are you planing to sail/row it. Prams tend to pound a lot when there are waves and work the best on rivers and smaller lakes.

Re: New to home build

Thanks for your response and your welcome.  I live on the west Wales coat, just to the north of Cardigan.  Although Cardigan Bay gets its share of choppy seas, inshore is often flat calm with the prevailing wind being offshore.  There's also the Teifi Estuary itself which is great for a bit of up and down sailing and some gentle fishing.  I'll do some more research on other designs before I commit.

Tom.

Re: New to home build

Just one thing to consider first

Do you want a pram or a boat with a stem.  I think prams are really cute and pretty but they have this problem with choppy seas. If you decide you want a pram, Francois Vivier has a very pretty one:

Vivier's boat is certainly lovely.  If anyone hasn't seen an example there are some great pictures here http://www.vivierboats.com/albumsen/seil/timber/slides/seil_skafaki1.html .
